Get Your Kix on Route 66

Getting my KIX on Route 66

Even though many are working hard to preserve the U.S. Route 66 legacy, the memories continue to fade away.

Commissioned in 1926,
U.S. Route 66 was the country's first 2-lane road linking the shores of Lake Michigan with the Pacific Ocean.  The historic highway consisted of more than 2,000 miles that spanned 3 time zones and 8 states - Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.  Because Route 66 went through the center of many towns and cities, it became Main Street U.S.A.

John Steinbeck called Route 66 "The Mother Road".  It was Bobby Troup's big hit "Get Your Kicks On Route 66" in 1946 that has been sung by more than 150 recording artists, including Chuck Berry, Rosemary Clooney, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Bing Crosby, Humble Pie, Mahattan Transfer, Johnny Mathis, Patti Page, R.E.M., Buddy Rich, Nancy Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Mel Torme, Andy Williams, The Young Razzcals and it was the theme song for the Route 66 TV series composed by Nelson Riddle. These recording stars and many others have made Route 66 the most famous highway in the world.  The song goes like this---

If you ever plan to motor west; Travel my way, take the highway that's the best.
